Education Innovation in Digital Image Processing, Biometrics, Machine Learning and Neural Networks

At FEI STU (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Slovakia), the subjects Digital Image Processing, Biometrics, and Machine Learning and Neural Netwoks are the components of the education process. Our university research in the areas related to the pattern recognition is based on these subjects. Digital image processing is used in image preprocessing, detection of objects and their localization. Methods of machine learning and neural networks serve for feature extraction and feature selection. Knowledge from these subjects form the basis of a research in the areas of biometrics and biomedicine. In the area of biometrics, our research is oriented to face recognition and iris recognition. In the area of biomedicine, our research is oriented to diagnostics in ophthalmology.

The  project is aimed to an innovation of existing subjects Digital Image Processing, Biometrics, and Machine Learning and Neural Networks in accordance to the newest trends in research and practice. It means it is necessary to rebuild, broaden and innovate lectures and exercises. Creation of the scripts (teaching materials) is a partial goal of the project. Created materials for the subjects are also planned to be used in a longlife learning. The project is interdiciplinary since the subjects belongs to the study programs Telecommunications, Applied Informatics. Optionally, they are usable also in study programs Cybernetics and Robotics.
